Unified Streaming Just Got Easier with HTML5
A Unified HD Streaming player capable of being seen everywhere is the goal and we’re a step closer with our latest updates to Monster Encoder to include HTML5 encoding. In addition to Unified Live HD Streaming, the new player is capable of being viewed on more devices and browsers than ever before for Video On Demand. The best part is that if HTML5 is not supported on the device or browser, it simply falls back to flash and plays.

Stream LIVE on Facebook!
Broadcasters can now stream LIVE and VOD content on Facebook in HD. Facebook users click on the thumbnail of a channel or VOD’s posted link that will immediately launch the player inside the Facebook page. No embed codes needed for the broadcaster either, just copy/paste the URL of the content onto Facebook and be sure to set a thumbnail for the link – something that Facebook prompts you to do. When clicked, the thumbnail opens a player on the wall. For more details, including manual links for the photographic step-by-step, please see our Facebook Press Release.
New WordPress Features Released
Since we initially launched the WordPress module we have been focusing on opening up the templates for even greater control. We’re happy to share that we have enabled several new widgets that allow you to set content into your site with more user-side control. This means less “coding” inside the templates and more drag-and-drop functionality!
Fishing Captain Kevin Johnsen, owner of Florida Keys Reel Adventures, has transformed his website into a one-stop shop for all of his marketing. Here are a few ways he is using the site to increase his business:
1) Homepage loaded with eye-catching content
2) HD media show vacation planners what’s in store
3) The format is controlled through the widget manager
4) Prominent link to Facebook for maximum exposure
5) Trip packages listed on eBay for easy booking

WEYW Morning Show interviews producer of Titanic and Avatar, Jon Landau
As seen on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/eyepartner
Florida Keys local TV station, WEYW, interviewed Jon Landau earlier this week. Jon Landau is probably best known as being a producer for Titanic and Avatar, but was also involved with the classics Dick Tracey and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
In order to make this interview possible, WEYW uses a TriCaster to mix the two video feeds and broadcast them simultaneously. TriCaster is an approved 3rd party broadcaster with the configuration available right in the TikiLIVE Broadcaster Dashboard. A simple copy/paste of the RTMP information is all it takes to broadcast to TikiLIVE.
Jon is speaking out about a tax referendum that has a big impact on the schools in the Florida keys. He makes it clear that the referendum, if passed, will not cost Monroe county residents. The referendum is to move 0.5% of the existing tax that is currently allocated for capital improvements and puts it into operational budgets. In his words, “education is the key to our future, it’s not about the buildings our children learn in. It’s not about where administrators are housed. It’s about the teachers and the programs the schools offer.” Jon reminds us to vote in the upcoming election and the referendum vote takes place today, along with the Florida GOP primaries.

Bitrate Breakdown
We get a lot of questions about bitrate so today we’ll break it down for you with the top 3 most commonly asked questions.
1) What is bitrate?
Bitrate is the number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time. For broadcasting / computing purposes, it is most commonly identified per second. Not to be confused with byte, consisting of 8 bits, which is used for storage – think Megabyte.
2) What bitrate should I use?
As a general rule, follow these bitrate ranges for broadcasting:
- • SD: 300-800 Kbps
- • HD (720p): 1.0-1.8 Mbps
- • HD (1080p): 1.7-4.0 Mbps
Things to keep in mind when choosing a bitrate:
How fast is your internet connection where you are broadcasting? To broadcast, your upload speed should be at least 50% greater than the bitrate at which you are looking to broadcast. If your upload speed is 1.5Mbps then you should not broadcast at a bitrate higher than 1.0Mbps (1,000Kbps).
What quality do you want to obtain? The higher the bitrate, the higher the quality up to a certain point. The upper limits of the ranges provided above represent the point of diminishing returns. Above these bitrates, it is very difficult to notice a difference. You’ll use more bandwidth and risk creating problems for your viewers which leads into the follow up question:
What type of internet speeds will your viewers have access to? Similar to upload speeds for broadcasters your viewers should have download speeds roughly 50% greater than your broadcasting bitrate in order to view without issue. This is to account for other programs using internet in the background as well as uncontrollable fluctuations in the internet speed from the network.
3) How is VOD bitrate determined?
The encoding bit rate in Kbps (kilobits per second) of a multimedia file is the size in megabytes divided by the time of the recording (in seconds), multiplied by 8000 (1,000 x 8). This takes the megabyte to kilobit conversion into account. For example, an hour-long video that is 320MB is streaming at 711kbps. To determine how large a file will be at a certain bitrate you should multiply the bitrate at which you are broadcasting by the length in seconds and divide by 8000.

IPTV Billing Middleware
Network owners can create and manage channel packages on their TikiLIVE network for a fraction of the cost of traditional middleware. Using the account dashboard, admins can set retail prices for individual channels or bundle them depending on their subscribers’ preferences. Compared to a traditional TV provider, subscribers can select only the content they want without having to buy a bundled package.
The turnkey middleware allows the network owner to deliver and monetize live and VOD content anywhere in the world to many compatible devices, including viewers on the web, set top boxes, and mobile devices (such as Android, iPhone/iPad, Blackberry). The middleware combined with the TikiLIVE platform allows network owners to easily manage their subscribers, track content owner royalties, and create financial reports from the easy-to-use dashboard.
“The TikiLIVE IPTV Middleware crosses the barriers that exist between different devices such as personal computers, iPhones, and set top boxes,” said Loretta McCarty, Chief Operating Officer of Eyepartner. “With this non-proprietary platform, network owners can capture subscriptions for any and all subscribers.”
Other features of the TikiLIVE IPTV Middleware allow network owners to:
• Easily control media access with one-time access or recurring subscriptions
• Set security preferences—subscribers must be granted access to view
• Manage royalty fees paid to content/channel producers
