Power over ethernet or poe is the process of passing electrical power along with data on Ethernet cabling. This allows a single cable to provide both data connection and electrical power to devices eliminating the need of a standard power outlet.

What is the benefit?

In some cases such as large ships and oil rigs that would like for their cabins to have mainland broadcasts, but were built with very few power outlets and equipped with an Ethernet drop in each cabin. POE is a much cheaper alternative than adding more outlets.

The POE set up

The setup is very simple all that is needed is a poe router or switch to enables the passing of power and data along Ethernet cables.

Next we will need a poe splitter this splits the power from the data for this we use a $16 Poe Splitter – By TP-Link (model TL-PoE150S), Lastly we use a DC converter to convert the 2.1mm x 5.5mm DC Plug on the splitter to the 1.35mm x 3.5mm plug size needed for our HTML5 white label Set Top Box.

To create a professional production grade looking broadcast you need one thing above all else and that is a video switcher. The main job of this is to take multiple video feeds and be able to switch from one feed to another to get the best shot possible or to simply change the angle to keep viewers interested.

A really good video switcher goes beyond this allowing the controller to overlay graphics for score boards or titles, live green screening for weather reporter like broadcasts, smooth transitions from one feed to the next, some audio mixing capabilities and the ability to show multiple feeds at the same time for group interviews.
